The Economics of Happiness

The Economics of Happiness

After five years in production „The Economics of Happiness“ has been released and the Austrian premier was on 15th December at Burgkino.

From ISEC, the makers of the award-winning film, Ancient Futures, the film played to a packed auditorium, which had been sold out a month before.

After a brief introduction from Barbara Waschmann of normale, an organisation which runs socio and economic based political film screenings, the film ran.

It produced reactions in me which varied from joy to shock to laughter, the latter from seeing some of the crazy things happening in our world today. My feelings of joy came from seeing projects which are successfully making a difference and creating change, run by people with optimism who are once again creating community where it has been lost.

After the film, a lively discussion was moderated by Sabine Gruber of alternativenforen, an organisation offering „ways out of the crisis“. In the foyer both before and after the film were a number of organisations showing their related projects. Key issues that were with me the following morning: - Ladakh ( the main town studied ) was „happier“ before the introduction of grant aided roads, grant aided fuel, and a western lifestyle.

Prior to this there was no unemployment, no lack of community, and no religious conflict for 500 years. Subsidised butter from New Zealand is now on sale at half the price of locally produced butter. The UK exports 760000 tonnes potatoes.

The UK also imports 760,000 tonnes of potates. Trade is thus balanced. ( figures maybe from another country, it is not just the UK doing this ! ) Cancer, oil spills, and poisoned water supplys neccessitating the need to buy water in bottles - they all contribute to GDP growth, which is currently every nations target.

Exporting consumerism means many more people get jealous , want more, and become unhappy. Growing food locally, together is a great and green solution for happiness and the world. Apples from the UK are flown to New Zealand for waxing, and then back to the UK for sale. \"Cheap \"lettuces grown in India take local resources that could be used to grow rice for the Indians themselves alieviating the need for food aid. We should be localising ( not globalising ) in many areas if we want a sustainable happier world.

Globalisation benefits the few, and not the many. Big companies take more money out of the local economy than small ones. In the bookshop example, of 100 dollars spent, 13 stayed from the big company store, 46 stayed from smaller, locally managed shop 100,000 Indian farmers have committed suicide because of globalised big farm practices. 4 million farmers have joined the global organistion via campesina .

Life can be good, we are intelligent, and we can choose to put all these things right for a happier world. For a full synopsis of the film, go to http://www.theeconomicsofhappiness.org/synopsis . !ARTreview - Nigel Stonham, MBA. Happiness Coach
