Vegan food gaining popularity

Eating vegan food from purely plant ingredients is the new trend. Gourmet chef Christian Petz will prepare a menu at the first Vegan Ball at Badeschiff Vienna on 23 February.

"Vegan food is not any more a niche in the market, but a trend. More and more people eat vegan food and even supermarkets offer vegan food", said Felix Hnat, head of the Vegan Society Austria to wien.ORF.at.

Mr Hnat organises the first Vegan Ball in Vienna together with Badeschiff. Celebrity chef Christian Petz will create a three course menu out of purely plant ingredients. "We were lucky to win Mr Petz over as he is no vegetarian", said Hnat.

Mr Petz will spoil the guests with artichokes filled with aubergine caviar in the gourmet restaurant Holy-Moly at Badeschiff. The main course will be Treviso Tardivo turnip and olives with thyme muffin and the dessert will be an exotic baked apple with mango and pineapple.

Felix Hnat had the idea to organise the ball: "Around five percent of Austrians eat vegetarian food, of which 10 percent are vegans. Vienna is the capital of vegetarianism", he said.

Bands will provide the music for the ball and later on, DJ Urbs (G-Stone) and DJ Joe-Joe (FM4) will play a set and the Organic DJ group Leitmotiv.

A vegan beauty studio will offer free vegan styling, which is free from products tested on animals. There is no specific dresscode, evening wear is enough.

The demand for vegan food is increasing, said Hnat. For this reason, a branch of a German chain will open in Vienna, offering purely plant products, which are organic and fair trade. "The opening is planned for April and the shop will be close to Mariahilfer Strasse."
