Vienna Boys Choir Backs Integration Through Music

Vienna Boys Choir Backs Integration Through Music

Immigrant children in Austria are being given singing lessons organised by the Vienna Boys choir as part of a project to encourage integration through music.

The idea that started as a pilot scheme three years ago has now grown so popular that more than 600 children across the capital Vienna are now getting free singing lessons.

The project is also open to Austrian children from poor families who would otherwise be unable to support the after-school singing lessons, which are usually paid as an extra to the main school tuition. The project is now so popular that in the Austrian capital's 10th district – which is a section of the city heavily populated with immigrant families – a special singing academy is now being founded.

As well as regular singing tuition the academy will also offer dancing and include a restaurant and a regular agenda of artistic and cultural events for visitors. They are also hoping to attract children of Austrian parents who can afford to pay for tuition together with all of the children getting lessons for free.

Organisers in Vienna famous for its musical roots not just in hosting the Vienna boys choir but also to its links to composers like Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, Schubert and Brahms believe that every child should have the chance to sing. They believe it encourages personal development and integration and gives children a sense of worth.

The "superar" project is also being backed by the posh Vienna Konzerthaus and the Catholic aid charity Caritas.

Children who take the courses are then given the chance to perform at concerts in the posh Konzerthaus, that was opened 1913 in the third district just at the edge of the first district, which has always tried to emphasise both tradition and innovative musical styles.
