Vienna public transport usage soars

More than one in three inner-city journeys are made on public transport, new figures have shown.

Viennese public transport agency Wiener Linien said today (Tues) that 35 per cent of trips within the city happen on public transport, while car rides take a 32 per cent share.

The company also said it had an overall 811.8 million passengers last year, 8.2 million rides more than in the previous year.

Wiener Linien continues to widen its underground train network as the U-Bahn line U2 will be expanded to reach Aspern in Vienna-Donaustadt from October.

The city�s underground network hit the headlines last week when a train on the U6 line derailed.

No one was injured in the 20 kilometres per hour incident near a construction site at L�ngenfeldgasse station.

Investigations have shown that a lack of gravel subsoil caused a minor deformation of the rails which eventually led to the derailment.

The affected U-Bahn route was closed down for only a few hours and service was back to normal the next morning.

Vienna�s public transport system is widely regarded as one of the safest and most reliable networks in the world.

News of an increase of public transport usage comes one day after Traffic Club Austria (VC�) expert Martin Blum announced that the number of Austrians holidaymakers travelling by train or coach was on the rise.

Blum said research has shown that around 1.4 million journeys to holiday destinations were made by railways and buses last year. The body added this was around every sixth overall holiday trip.

It also said that the number meant an increase by around one third compared to 2005 figures. Soaring fuel prices are being held responsible for the development.

Cars however retain their status as the most popular means of transportation for Austrians with five million holiday journeys made in 2009. Blum said planes came second with 2.7 million trips.

Insurer Generali found recently that only one in ten Austrian motorists could imagine life without a car.
