Austrian cops praised over rape suspect arrest

US police have praised Austria for "magnificent" police cooperation after an Afghan suspected of serial rapes in the USA was arrested last week in Salzburg province.

Timothy Williams, the head of Interpol in the USA, said yesterday (Tues) that Austrian police’s arrest of Ali Achekzai, 29,  – wanted for a string of attacks in the US in 2004 - had been a "magnificent example" of international police cooperation.

He added that US authorities would request the Afghan’s extradition.

Federal Crime Office (BK) spokesman Alexander Marakovits had said last week that Achekzai had been arrested in Neukirchen am Großvenediger in Salzburg province.

The man had been living in Austria as an asylum applicant since 2006.
