Munich - Germany's capital of sports and culture

Munich is the perfect choice for spending a brief holiday, the Austrian Times can confirm.

The number of Austrians visiting the southern German city is expected to rise as Federal Railways (ÖBB) plans to further improve its high-speed link from Vienna to Munich in the coming years. The company – which has succeeded with its Railjet connection – is pressurised to keep the quality at utmost standards as Westbahn, a private rail passenger transport company, will start operating between Vienna and Salzburg in December. Apart from convenient railway links, aviation companies are offering affordable flights from several Austrian airports to Munich.

Munich – loved by tourists from all over the world for its cultural heritage – has always been a city of sports as well. The provincial capital of Bavaria is not only the home of world-class football in the form of UEFA Champions League 2001 winners Bayern Munich. The city’s Marathon (www.muenchenmarathon.de) has a long tradition as well. It will take place for the 27th time next year. The performance of the Austrian Times’ one-man running team – who finished this year’s edition in three hours and 21 minutes earlier this month – proves that the competition’s course enables runners to finish the notorious 42.195 kilometres in a new personal best time.

The Munich Marathon – which has been organised by Gernot Weigl for 12 years, is popular among athletes for leading through the picturesque city centre and for finishing in the Olympic Stadium. The run is Germany’s fourth-biggest Marathon. Around 16,000 people competed in the Munich Marathon 2011 on 9 October.

The Austrian Times recommends the King's Hotel First Class (www.kingshotels.de). The hotel is located near Munich’s central railway station and within walking distance from the city’s major sights such as the Frauenkirche cathedral (www.muenchner-dom.de), the Residenz city palace (www.residenz-muenchen.de) and the Alte Pinakothek art museum (www.pinakothek.de). Friendly staff, nice rooms and a delicious breakfast range guarantee a perfect stay at the King's Hotel First Class which is a hotel of the four-star category.

Baedeker’s new Munich guidebook is out now. The 326-page publication features interesting background information and little-known facts about the city’s sights, culinary tradition and much more.
