Snowmen record bid underway

Around 1,500 snowmen have been built in a new world record attempt in Lower Austria.

Managers of the Hochkar ski resort said today (Mon) that over 3,700 people registered to participate in the spectacular attempt to enter the Guinness Book of World Records. They added that so far approximately 1,500 snowmen of various sizes have already been created by volunteers. The bid is not yet over, as more snowmen are under construction.

Organisers are optimistic that Guinness World Record officials will acknowledge the effort, explaining it is the first world record of that kind since similar previous attempts occurred in shorter periods of time than theirs. The quirky activities at the Hochkar mountain range started on 31 January and are set to end this Friday (11 February).

The event's organisers – who will award the most creative creations – said many of the snowmen resembled animals while some participants were apparently inspired by animated TV characters like Spongebob and Homer Simpson. Organisers also revealed that some contenders even managed to place their snowmen on trees.
