A cappella mania hits Vienna

By Samantha Cox

A cappella musicians from across the world are to perform across Vienna as part of the international a cappella festival "Voice Mania 2009" beginning on 6 November.

Described by director Nuschin Vossoughi as a festival of ‘warbling, whispering, twittering, humming, buzzing and purring’, as well as singing, "Voice Mania 2009" will  bring together renowned a cappella artists from around the world. They will perform music from across the musical spectrum, from classical to jazz, pop to punk, using just their voices - with no instrumental accompaniment.

Highlights include several comedy acts, Dutch a cappella punks "YeoMen" and Israeli group "The Vocal Octet", as well as groups from Zimbabwe, Madagascar, the UK and Austria.

The festival opens in extravagant style on November 6 with performers singing from balconies in Vienna's old city and a free concert at Haus der Musik. It then continues in venues across the city, closing with a beatbox concert on 6 December.

Tickets are available from www.wien-ticket.at
