Koller to take Austria reins

Marcel Koller, the former Swiss international, has agreed a deal to succeed Dietmar Constantini as the Austrian national coach until December 2013.

Koller, a former favourite of Swiss side Grasshopper Club, takes over from Constantini who stepped down on 13 September. Koller, a seven time Swiss league winner as a player and a two time winner as manager of FC St. Gallen in 2000 and Grasshoppers in 2003, is set to begin his new role in November.

Austrian Football Association President Leopold Windtner commented that "we have found a solution that fulfils our requirements". Those requirements of course being a successful 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign.

Austria currently find themselves fourth in UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying Group A, 16 points behind leaders Germany and even six behind second-placed Turkey. However, Koller will not take charge until after Austria’s remaining EURO 2012 qualifiers against Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan. He commented that "I want to use the time to prepare for my move to Vienna."

The 50-year-old will eventually take charge for the first time in a friendly against the Ukraine on 15 November.
