Marach and Qureshi win Bangkok doubles

Oliver Marach has celebrated his 11th ATP doubles tournament career title.

The 31-year-old Styrian and his Pakistani partner Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi beat German duo Michael Kohlmann / Alexander Waske in a thriller in the final of the ATP hard court event in Bangkok, the federal capital of Thailand, yesterday (Sun). Marach and Qureshi had to go into the tiebreak twice to win the match. The victory was Marach’s third doubles title this season after triumphs at events in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Hamburg, Germany.

Tamira Paszek shocked Jelena Jankovic in Peking, China. The 20-year-old from Vorarlberg beat the Serbian star in straight sets (7-5, 6-4) in the second round of the 4.5-million-US dollar tournament. Jankovic is a former number one player and one of the biggest names in the sport. She has won 12 tournaments in her carrer. Paszek – who reached the quarter final of this year’s WTA Grand Slam event at Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom, this June – went on to beat Czech Petra Cetkovska 1-6, 6-4, 6-2. She is now set to clash with Australian ace Samantha Stosur or Russia’s Maria Kirilenko.

Jürgen Melzer remains in 21st in the ATP World Ranking. Austria’s best tennis player lost against Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis 3-6, 6-7 in the quarter final of the ATP event of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Friday, after having crushed South African Rik de Voest in the previous round. Melzer and German Philipp Petzschner won last year’s Wimbledon doubles and the same competition at this year’s US Open. Andreas Haider-Maurer is the second-best Austrian in the new ATP ranking which was published today (Mon) in 86th. Paszek is the best Austrian female player in the WTA ranking (54th).
