Self criticism after Slovakia beats Austria in football

Yesterday's (Wed) 2:1 triumph of Slovakia's football team against Austria in Klagenfurt, Carinthia gave the Austrians one more reason for self criticism.

Apart from the 3:1 victory over Latvia, Austria's football encounters drew the same reactions since June – well played but too inefficient. The lack of scoring goals remains Austria's biggest problem.

Austria's Stuttgart legend Martin Harnik said: "It is doubly bitter not only because of our spoiled chances but because of how few chances the Slovaks had. They scored two goals from out of one and a half chances."

Defender Emanuel Pogatetz said: "We got into the deficit by accident. The Slovaks drew back very much. It was hard for us to break their lock." As soon as Austria lagged behind, they cramped up. Pogatetz added: "We just have to take the lead once and then play football in a relieved way.

Mid field player Julian Baumgartlinger consented: "We have to break this series and finally for once score the first goal. Pogatetz ranted more about lacking penetrating power in the offensive: "It was impossible to top the inefficiency there."

Baumgartlinger considers this lack the main reason for which Austria's football team is only placed beyond 60 in the world ranking.

Austria's striker Marc Janko from the Dutch club Twente Enschede who scored four goals this year said: "We are rarely the determining team in a game and can thus only aim at counters."

Meanwhile the Austrian Football Association's (ÖFB) patience is wearing thin according to the Austrian State Broadcaster ORF , especially that of ÖFB head Leo Windtner. Austria's next game on 3 September will not only be the last theoretical chance for a qualification for the European championship but will also determine Dietmar Constantini's future as team manager.
