Austrians take a pounding in 'Kitz'

Austrian tennis fans are gutted as all local heroes made early exits at an Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) tournament in Tyrol.

Dominic Thiem, 17, lost against Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) on Monday. German Philipp Kohlschreiber needed just 66 minutes to beat 43-year-old Thomas Muster 6-3, 6-0 on the same day in the first round of the 450,000-US dollar event in Kitzbühel. Both Thiem and Muster were given wild card by organisers who staged the clay court tournament for the first time after a three-year hiatus enforced by little interest in sponsoring the event.

All Austrian hopes were set on Andreas Haider-Maurer but the 24-year-old from Lower Austria surprisingly lost against unseeded Croat Antonio Veic in two hours and 23 minutes (7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 2-6) yesterday (Tues).

Haider-Maurer – the number 70 in world tennis – was the last Austrian in the running for the title in "Kitz" after 11 local aces crashed out in the qualification stage. Austria’s best tennis player, Jürgen Melzer, decided to get ready for the hard court season in the United States instead of competing in the Kitzbühel tournament organised by former Davis Cup star Alexander Antonitsch.

Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela, Italian star Fabio Fognini, Brazil’s Joao Souza, Dutchman Robin Haase and others are still vying for the trophy in the ski vacation and hiking holiday hotspot.
