Jürgen Melzer has triumphed at Wimbledon for the third time in his career.
The Lower Austrian tennis ace and Czech Iveta Benesova, 26, won the Grand Slam tournament’s mixed double event in London, Great Britain, yesterday (Sun). The duo celebrated a clear 6-3, 6-2 win over Indian Mahesh Bhupathi and Russian Elena Vesnina.
Melzer, the Austrian number one in world tennis, won the event’s boys’ singles competition in 1999 before triumphing in the men’s doubles with German Philipp Petzschner last year.
"It’s a great feeling to win at Wimbledon a third time. Now it seems all that’s missing for me is the main event (the men’s singles), but let’s stay realistic," Melzer said today (Mon).
"We really harmonised on the pitch and performed on top level," he said about the partnership with Benesova.
The 30-year-old was beaten by Belgian Xavier Malisse in the third round of the competition he referred to in straight sets (6-7, 3-6, 0-6) at the 2011 edition of Wimbledon. Melzer – who had been plagued by chronic back pains in the past weeks – was in top form last year when he won the Bank Austria (BA) Tennis Trophy in Vienna. He also reached the semi final of the French Open in Paris in 2010.
