Late double strike rescues Austria against Kazakhstan

Austria celebrated a last minute victory against underdogs Kazakhstan last night (Tues).

The team of Dietmar Constantini performed poorly for most of the 90 minutes of their first Euro2012 qualifier against the Bernd Storck’s squad in Salzburg’s Red Bull Arena.

Late goals by Austria Vienna stand-in captain Roland Linz (91’) and 1. FC Kaiserslautern ace Erwin Hoffer (92’) avoided embarrassment for the national team who made clear ahead of the match they regarded themselves as clear favourites to win.

Constantini said: "We became insecure after failing to turn early chances into goals. The first goal was a typical Roland Linz strike. He was where he was supposed to be at this very moment. He justified his nomination."

VfB Stuttgart striker Martin Harnik admitted: "It’s disappointing it took us so long to seal the victory. We got away with a black eye."

Austria face Azerbaijan in Vienna on 8 October before the qualification stage for the 2012 European Football Championship – set to take place in Poland and Ukraine – continues next year.

The Austrian Under-21 national team, meanwhile, have missed their final chance to qualify for the Under-21s Euro2011 in Denmark. The team managed by former Werder Bremen captain Andreas Herzog lost 1-2 against Scotland in Aberdeen yesterday.

The Austrian Bundesliga will continue with four matches on Saturday. The 294th Vienna derby between rivals Rapid Vienna and Austria Vienna – which sold out last weekend – will take place on Sunday (kickoff: 4pm).

All eyes will be on ex-PSV Eindhoven striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink who is expected to perform for his new club Rapid for the first time.

ORF 1 will broadcast the match live.

The Austrian Bundesliga table after six rounds:

SV Ried, 15 points
Wacker Innsbruck, 13
Sturm Graz, 10
Rapid Vienna, 9
Kapfenberg, 8
Austria Vienna, 8
Magna Wiener Neustadt, 7
Red Bull Salzburg, 4
LASK Linz, 3
SV Mattersburg, 3
