Rapid Vienna retained their chances of winning a 33rd league title after beating city rivals Austria Vienna in yesterday’s 292nd Viennese derby.
Rapid were the better team in the second half after both sides delivered disappointing performances in the first 45 minutes of yesterday’s (Sun) clash.
Rapid Vienna captain Steffen Hofmann took the lead from the penalty spot in the 68th minute, while Croat striker Nikica Jelavic upped the score to 2-0 eight minutes later.
Austria Vienna were furious about the penalty decision based on an apparent elbow check by Polish defender Jacek Bak against Rapid ace Mario Konrad. But while TV footage revealed little of an assault by Bak, cameras caught Konrad trying to take revenge for Bak’s pushing by elbow-checking him.
Austria Vienna coach Karl Daxbacher said it was "interesting" that linesman Alain Hoxha once played for Rapid youth teams. Hoxha reacted by saying: "That’s 20 years ago. My decision was correct. This was a penalty."
Austria Vienna star Milenko Acimovic meanwhile claimed: "Even the Rapid players laughed about this decision. It was a late Christmas gift."
Acimovic was sent off with a red card for insulting Hoxha and referee Gerhard Grobelnik in extra time. Austria Vienna midfielder Julian Baumgartlinger had already been sent off in the 87th minute after a second yellow card.
Vice champions Rapid are now six points down to champions Red Bull Salzburg who beat Kapfenberg 1-0 on Saturday.
SV Ried defeated Mattersburg 3-0, while the matches Magna Wiener Neustadt against Sturm Graz and LASK Linz against Austria Kärnten both ended goalless.
The Bundesliga continues on Friday when Kapfenberg host Magna Wiener Neustadt. Mattersburg will clash with LASK Linz on Saturday. Also on Saturday, third-placed Sturm Graz will host Rapid Vienna, while Austria Kärnten meet SV Ried. And on Sunday, Austria Vienna face leaders Red Bull.
The Bundesliga table after 24 rounds:

Austria Vienna, 43
SV Ried, 31
Magna Wiener Neustadt, 30
Mattersburg, 30
