Two bronze medals in one day for Austria

Austrian Nordic combined athlete Bernhard Gruber sensationally grabbed Olympic bronze in yesterday’s (Thurs) Individual large hill / 10 kilometre event.

The 27-year-old was beaten by Americans Bill Demong and Johnny Spillane.

Mario Stecher came eighth, Christoph Bieler finished in 12th and Felix Gottwald – Austria’s most successful Winter Olympics athlete of all time – only ranked 17th.

Gruber said: "I’m overwhelmed to stand on the podium today after years of hard work."

The Salzburg-based athlete was also part of the Austrian Nordic combined team which snatched gold in Tuesday’s team event.

Another Austrian athlete won bronze yesterday as skier Elisabeth Görgl came third in the women’s giant slalom. The Styrian led the field after Wednesday’s first leg, but was beaten by Germany’s Viktoria Rebensburg and Slovene Tina Maze in the second leg which had to be postponed by 24 hours due to thick dog.

Görgl, 29, already won bronze in the Vancouver Olympic downhill.

She said after yesterday’s event: "The piste was relatively soft – much softer than I had expected it to be. But the conditions were not bad. I’ll have another chance [for Olympic gold] in four years time."

Kathrin Zettel was the second best Austrian in fifth, while Eva-Maria Brem finished in seventh. Michaela Kirchgasser ranked on a disappointing 15th place.

Peter Schröcksnadel, head of the Austrian Skiing Federation (ÖSV), said: "We had expected more, but Elisabeth Görgl did a great job. She was unlucky since she was the only competitor who had to face fog."

Austria is, with 12 medals, in seventh in the Vancouver Games medals table after 70 of 86 competitions.
