Vienna officials have announced a second "Wiener Käfigmeisterschaft" will take place this summer.
City authorities said they want to hold the contest – in which amateur street soccer, beach volleyball and streetball teams battle it out – every year after more than 80 teams took part in last autumn’s first edition.
What makes the competition special is that it takes place at the capital’s dozens "caged" football, beach volleyball and streetball courts ("Käfige"). These venues, where everyone can do sports free of charge, have become a major part of urban culture and a popular meeting point for young Viennese.
Inter Milan striker Marko Arnautovic, Rapid Vienna’s Veli Kavlak and Eintracht Frankfurt star Ümit Korkmaz all loved to spend most of their free time on the "caged" football courts of their home city.
Korkmaz, who joined German Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt from Rapid Vienna in 2006, was even discovered in a leisure time "cage match" by a Rapid talent scout.
District tournaments for this year’s competition will take place between 1 May and 19 June before the best teams of the city battle it out in the finals held as part of the Donauinselfest between 25 and 27 June, one of Europe’s biggest open air music and entertainment events.
The registration period is to start soon at www.kaefigmeister.at
Participation in the second "Wiener Käfigmeisterschaft" is free of charge.
