Red Bull Salzburg target Eintracht Frankfurt star

By Thomas Hochwarter

Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg have set their sights on German Bundesliga star Alexander Meier, according to reports.

German media claimed today (Weds) Red Bull, who are second in the Austrian Bundesliga, had sent scouts out to watch the 26-year-old Eintracht Frankfurt striker– who scored 18 goals in 141 matches for his club – during Eintracht’s 2-0 victory over Mainz 05.

Meier refused to comment on rumours he might leave the club he joined six years ago.

"I feel fine here since I have spent half of my ‘footballer’s life’ at Eintracht," the striker – who has scored six goals this season – said.

Red Bull Salzburg reportedly face competition from Hannover 96 for the player.

Eintracht Frankfurt coach Michael Skibbe said he hoped Meier would stay.

"He has had a consistent season. This fact sparks interest at other clubs, of course," Skibbe admitted.

Meier – a teammate of former Rapid Vienna midfielder Ümit Korkmaz at Eintracht – would face tough competition if he decided to join Red Bull Salzburg.

Former Bayern Munich star Alexander Zickler, Cameroon ace Somen Tchoyi and Austrian Marc Janko, who scored 39 goals in the past Bundesliga season, are all key players in Huub Stevens’s team.

Austrian newspapers recently reported Red Bull were looking to add to their squad after getting through the Europa League group stage.
