German investigators are examining Austrian Bundesliga games after a Europe-wide multi-million-Euro betting scam was uncovered.
Prosecutors in Bochum – who said investigations took in nine countries – announced today (Fri) 11 matches in Austria’s two top leagues were being looked at after news of the Europe-wide sports betting scandal became public yesterday.
Investigators added at least 200 matches and 200 people were involved in what could turn out to be the biggest case of fraud in European sports history.
Fifteen suspects have already been arrested and 50 locations raided in Austria, Great Britain, Germany and Switzerland, prosecutors said.
Crooks are accused of making millions by bribing players, managers and referees as well as other football officials to influence match results before then placing huge bets on with European and Asian sports betting companies.
Investigations are continuing.
