Elk Haus cycling team is history

By Thomas Hochwarter

A top Austrian cycling team has dissolved after losing its main sponsor, it emerged today (Thurs).

Elk Haus team manager Bernhard Rassinger said: "There will be no Elk team next year."

Rassinger explained he saw himself forced to end activities after 13 successful years since house producer Elk has backed out of its sports sponsoring activities due to the economic crisis. He revealed plans to build up a new team to be founded in two years, however.

Elk board president Erich Weichselbaumer: "We are unable to continue the sponsoring. I personally deeply regret that these cuts had to be made."

Team manager Rassinger said all Elk team cyclists have already found a new team. Styrian Markus Eibegger and Vorarlberg’s Matthias Brändle already left the team last month when the end was predictable.

The news is a fresh blow to Austria’s professional cycling scene, which is struggling since its two best athletes – Bernhard Kohl and Christian Pfannberger – were banned for doping last year.

While Kohl – who finished the 2008 Tour de France in third place – admitted his wrongdoings and pledged to cooperate with investigators, Pfannberger denied having taken any illegal substances.
