Agassi attacks Muster over 1994 'toupee attack'

By Thomas Hochwarter

Tennis legend Andre Agassi has revealed how he was enraged when Austrian ace Thomas Muster almost pulled his toupee off on court.

In his autobiography "Open", eight-time Grand Slam champion Agassi recalls how Muster, having beaten Agassi in the second round of the 1994 French Open in five dramatic sets, patted the American’s cheek – and pretended to grab at his baseball cap.

Agassi says in his book: "Apart from the fact it was a disdainful gesture, he almost took my toupee off."

Agassi writes he told Muster never to do it again, and warned him he would never lose to him again.

"Nice try, Muster. Don’t touch my hair. Don’t ever do that again," the 39-year-old American – who retired three years ago – wrote.

Muster beat Agassi four out of five times before their 1994 duel but Agassi kept his word and sent Muster packing in their three clashes that followed.

Asked about Agassi’s behaviour on and off court during his career, Muster had only good words about his former rival.

"He was a very fair sportsmen – a wild kid at the start who turned into a Sir and a gentlemen," the former number one player said recently.

And Muster – who won 45 tournaments before retiring in 1999 – claimed everyone in tennis knew Agassi’s long hair was not real. "It was common knowledge (on the ATP circuit) that they were fake," the 42-year-old Styrian said.

Meanwhile Romanian legend Ilie Nastase and Russian ace Marat Safin have called on Agassi to return all his titles after he revealed he escaped a doping ban by lying to officials after taking the recreational drug Crystal Meth in 1997.

"If he is as fair as he claims to be, he take this path until the end. The ATP has a bank account where he can transfer all the prize money he won," Safin said.
