Koubek to work with Federer again

By Thomas Hochwarter

Austrian tennis ace Stefan Koubek has said he will join Roger Federer for an exclusive week of training next week.

Koubek, 32, said today (Fri) Federer had invited him to train with him in Switzerland after the pair practised together ahead of this year’s French Open.

But while Koubek crashed out in the first round of the Grand Slam event, Federer won the tournament.

"Working together in Sardinia obviously helped him more than me," Koubek said

The Carinthian world number 149, a long time friend of Federer’s, said it was his goal to get back among the world’s top 100 players after a series of injuries.

Meanwhile there was good news for Austria’s number one Jürgen Melzer who reached the quarter final of the ATP tournament in Umag, Croatia, after beating Pablo Cuevas 6-4, 6-3 last night. The 28-year-old from Lower Austria took revenge for a defeat suffered against the Uruguayan only one week earlier in Hamburg. Melzer, who is seeded fourth in Umag, clashes with local hero Ivan Ljubicic today.
