Ice-hockey icon Ron Kennedy dies from cancer

By Thomas Hochwarter

Legendary ice-hockey coach Ron Kennedy has died at the age of 56.

The Canadian-born coach, who passed away yesterday (Thurs) had been battling cancer for many years.

Kennedy had returned to coaching after an operation to remove a brain tumour three years ago. But he retired in December last year, saying: "I thought to have it under control. But it doesn’t look good."

Kennedy played for Innsbruck between 1982 and 1984 and returned as manager in 1992. He won three league titles with Villacher SV (1993, 1999, 2002) and worked as national team coach between 1006 and 2002.

The Austrian national team sensationally reached a 3-3 draw against Finland at the 2000 World Championships coached by Kenndy. One year later, the team beat hockey giants USA 3-0.

Kennedy, who married a Carinthian woman in 2000, was nicknamed "Sir" in Austria and was admired for his self-control and role-model behaviour.
