Doping cyclist´s legal action over interview

By Thomas Hochwarter

Retired cyclist Bernhard Kohl is taking legal action after a French newspaper published statements he says he never made.

French sports daily L'Equipe published an interview on Tuesday with quotes from the 27-year-old saying he could not believe only three cyclists had been proven to have taken the blood booster CERA during last year’s Tour de France.

Kohl, who finished the event in third, was one of them.

But today (Thurs) Kohl said he made no such statement, nor had he claimed that the top ten finishers of the event could all have tested positive for doping.

Cedric Vasseur, president of the international cyclists’ representative union, had appealed to Kohl to come forward with evidence of the doping after the interview had been published.

Kohl said: "I said that such extraordinary achievements as in the Tour de France are hard to believe and can hardly occur without doping."

At a press conference last month announcing his retirement Kohl said he wanted to end "this double life based on lies" and pledged to cooperate with authorities to track down other doping offenders. Earlier this year, he admitted having used a blood centrifuge, adding that other athletes did so as well.
