New Year's Day

1 January: New Year's Day is a public holiday in Austria. New Year's Eve, known in Austria as Sylvesterabend, the Eve of St. Sylvester, is celebrated with a punch made of cinnamon, sugar and red wine prepared to honour the Saint and chase away the evil spirits of the year. Austrians consider pork and carp traditional food items that are said to bring good luck in the New Year. Dinner tables are often decorated with little pigs made of chocolate, marzipan or maple sugar and Austrians exchange Glucksbringer (lucky charms), which are chocolate or marzipan candies shaped in the form of pigs, horseshoes and gold coins. At midnight radio and television programmes broadcast the sound of the Pummerin (the bell of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna). After that, large fireworks are lit in bigger cities and people attend midnight parties embellished with confetti, streamers and champagne.
