Issues in Contemporary Black America - A talk by Gail Milissa Grant in Vienna

The embassy of the United States of America in Vienna, Austria will host an event entitled "Issues in Contemporary Black America" on 2 February 2012.

The talk which will explore the political and social situation of African-Americans will be given by author and public speaker Gail Milissa Grant in the club rooms of the Austro-American society in Stallburgasse 2, Vienna.

American born Gail Milissa Grant was brought up in St. Louis around the time of the civil rights movement of the 1950s. Daughter of a prominent civil rights attorney and activist, her presentation will focus on contemporary black America and in particular the effects of having a black president and the Tea Party.

Grant will also discuss in her talk her book "At the Elbows of my Elders", a discussion of the struggles of everyday life for a middle-class black family in the 20th Century.  The book won the Benjamin Franklin Book of the Year 2009 in the autobiography/memoir category, and received an Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History in 2010.

Grant studied Art History at Howard University in Washington D.C. and later became an assistant professor of art and architectural history at the same institution before working as a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Information Agency and U.S. State Department for more than 20 years.

The talk begins at 6pm on Thursday, 2 February and will not be in the Amerikahaus due to renovations that are currently taking place.
