More people than ever had paid a visit to Austria’s number one tourist attraction, Schönbrunn in 2011. A total of 2.7 million visitors, an increase of three per cent on 2010, walked through the palace gates during the course of the year.
"2011 has been the strongest year yet for visitor numbers at the Schönbrunn Palace," explained Minster for Tourism and Economics Reinhold Mitterlehner. Some 2.7 million bookings for entrance to the palace and other activities available on the site of Schönbrunn were recorded. Without taking into account multiple visits from people throughout the year, numbers still increased by two per cent compared with 2010.
"The Schönbrunn numbers reinforce that we, having implemented the tourist strategy "Cities and Culture", have captured the travelling market. Our historical and cultural heritage is one of the most valuable treasures in Austria," explained Mitterlehner.
A further increase of 670,000 guests were recorded visiting the Imperial Apartments, the Sisi Museum and the Silver collection at the Hofburg this year, all of which are owned by the Schönbrunner Schlossgesellschaft (SKB). The total turnover of the SKB in 2011 in initial calculations was 35.7 million Euros of which 23 million Euros came from entrance fees and a further 8 million from shop purchases. This total is six per cent higher than in the previous year. As such, 2011 was the most economically successful year on record for the various tourist attractions as a whole.
Since Schönbrunn Palace’s exclusion from state administration in 1992, the attraction has been required to manage all investment for preservation of the cultural heritage on its own. Over the last 20 years however the Palace has successfully become an important source of revenue for the national budget. Around 27 million Euros has been given to the government up until now by means of taxes and rent.
Around 9.5 million Euros have also been spent on restoration works and on creating new visitor services in the palace over 2011. The extensive restoration works taking place on the main gallery are expected to complete in the early part of 2012.
"Only through the on-going expansion of such features at the palace, is it possible to have more than double the amount of visitors than when we started almost 20-years-ago," said Schönbrunn managing director Franz Sattlecker.
Restoration works will continue in 2012 with the renovation of the endless rooms in the palace and the Palm House.
