Mistletoe and Mozart in Salzburg

Mistletoe and Mozart in Salzburg

By Rebecca Musgrave

Nestled alongside St Peters Abbey in the heart of the old city of Salzburg is St Peter Stiftskeller. Believed to be the oldest restaurant in Europe, dating from 803 AD, the establishment also hosts, on an almost nightly basis, Mozart Dinner Concerts.

Behind the original 12 salons whose charm and self-proclaimed "Salzburg Gemütlichkeit" attracted the likes of Doctor Faustus and even Michael Haydn in 1760, lies the Baroque Salon. The extension, added in 1903, has provided a suitably grand location since 1996 for the Salzburg Mozart Dinner Concerts.

From 25 November 2011 visitors have the opportunity to experience a series of Advent Mozart Dinner Concerts. As with the regular evenings throughout the year, guests will enjoy the music of Mozart as performed by five string musicians and two opera singers. The three course traditional feast, enjoyed in between the musical interludes, becomes four for advent and the candlelit baroque hall is magnificently decked out for Christmas.

Much of the music will be familiar to guests with the "Amadeus Consort Salzburg" performing the likes of The Magic Flute, Don Giovanni, and Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. This can all be enjoyed whilst tucking into 17th and 18th century fare which even features vegetables from the Prior’s garden.

If this is not enough to get diners well and truly into Advent mood then they could pay a visit beforehand to the Advent Market in the courtyard of St. Peter's Restaurant for a pre-concert glass of Glühwein (mulled wine).

A Mozart Dinner Concert takes place at 4.30pm every Saturday and provide the normal three course dinner and music. The Advent Mozart Dinner Concerts take place at 7.30pm from Sunday to Friday and 8.30pm on Saturdays until 1 January 2012.

Adult tickets for advent concerts are priced at 62 Euros and 36 Euros for children.
