The Daily Mail’s Emily Payne admits the Austrian capital turned out to be 'hardly the Vienna I pictured' on her recent visit (pictured: the Volksgarten park).

UK daily on Vienna's 'timeless elegance' and 'impossibly cool ambience'

A leading British newspaper’s travel writer praised Vienna as a city which has "no intention of forgetting its past" as it is "soaring into the 21st century".

The Daily Mail’s Emily Payne admits the Austrian capital turned out to be "hardly the Vienna I pictured" on her recent visit.

Payne – who visited both down-to-earth discos and the classical music concerts – describes Vienna as "a city where music is treated with reverence."

The reporter, who enjoyed a typical Austrian dish of spinach, potatoes and fried egg at the Café Museum in the city centre, points out that Vienna is "famed for its café culture."

She writes in her article which was published today (Thurs): "The traditional coffee houses, with cream buns piled high, waiters in black and beautifully dated interiors, are still thriving."

Payne does not fail to mention the city’s more modern aspects such as the Naschmarkt on a late Saturday morning.

"There's a strong Turkish influence in this area. The olives are massive and breakfasts come with falafels. (…) a DJ plays jazz. The smoky, impossibly cool ambience is more Manhattan than old-school Europe," she wonders.

Payne also recommends the permanent exhibition of paintings by Gustav Klimt and contemporaries at the Belvedere Palace and the Leopold Museum.

Referring to a boutique manager’s statement, she concludes: "Timeless elegance with a touch of eternal empress – the whole city feels like this to me."

Only last month, Guardian columnist Rachel Cooke revealed: "In Vienna, almost everything I ate was delicious."

Cooke admitted in her article for the daily London newspaper that she fell for the "marvellously-named Kaiser rolls" and the Gabelfrühstück – a popular midmorning snack – after she "had not expected to like Austrian food."
