Lorenz shines in Burgtheater's 'What You Will'

Long-time Burgtheater audience favourites like actor Michael Maertens are drawing the crowds to a German version of "What You Will" – but the performance given by an up-and-coming star is the real highlight of the play, the Austrian Times can reveal.

"Jedermann" star Nicholas Ofczarek and German acting icon Joachim Meyerhoff are playing the leading roles in "Was ihr wollt", the William Shakespeare comedy also known as "Twelfth Night", at the Burgtheater in Vienna.

Austrian reviewers voiced doubts that the stage production – directed by Burgtheater boss Matthias Hartmann himself – will succeed due to the big name stars, and preview articles pointed out that audiences may focus more on who is appearing on stage rather than the actors’ actual performances.

The Austrian Times however found that the somewhat risky endeavour worked out. The theatre’s gifted cast ensures there are very few dull moments during the three hour play, with Maertens and Ofczarek – who almost forced Hartmann to sign him up for a role in the play, according to reports – getting many laughs. The Burgtheater stars seem to enjoy their roles, but their comical performances are over the top at some points.

Despite her renowned co-stars, it is young Katharina Lorenz - who is also starring in a Burgtheater adaptation of "Faust: The First Part of the Tragedy" - who is the star of the stage in "What You Will", and if her performance as Viola is anything to go by, she will surely go on to have a glittering acting career.

Tickets for "What You Will" – which will be on several times in the remaining months of the current season – are in great demand. Check www.burgtheater.at or call +43 1 514 444 140 for ticket information for the celebrated play and other Burgtheater productions.
