Tuluba takes a splash

An elephant born in a Viennese zoo half a year ago has a new favourite hobby – splashing in a basin of water.

Tuluba, who turned six months last Sunday, loves to entertain his young fans by splashing in the water before rolling around in a pile of sawdust to dry off.

"He really enjoys playing in the water, although he’s almost too big for the basin," Schönbrunn Zoo director Dagmar Schratter said today (Weds).

Tuluba now weighs almost 300 kilograms, according to Schratter. She also explained the young tusker was still breastfed by his mum Numbi.

Numbi, Tuluba and his brother Kibo were recently treated to a 30-metre Christmas tree.

The spruce was erected at a Christmas market in front of Schönbrunn Palace which is just a stone-throw from the historic zoo.

"The elephants normally get leaf trees. A conifer is a nice change in diet for them," one carer explained, adding that munching the coniferous wood is good for cleaning their teeth.
