Vienna's English Speaking Catholic Community

People from over 30 nationalities make up Vienna’s growing English speaking Catholic community (VESCC) which has been uniting people with a common faith and language ever since the end of the Second World War.

The community began over 60 years ago,  when Father Leopold Ungar was asked to begin celebrating the Eucharist for the British and American Forces who were amongst the occupation troops in the city. For many years the mass was held in the impressive Votivkirche, just beyond the Ringstrasse.

Father Ungar – who was also head of the Austrian branch of Catholic charity Caritas for many years – continued to serve as pastor for the English speaking community until his death in 1992. At the present the community pastor is Fr. Kevin Soars, a Diocesan Priest from Manchester in England.

Mass is held every Sunday at 10:00 a.m. in the St. Francis of Assisi Church, at Mexikoplatz, in the 2nd district, and at 12:30 p.m. each Thursday at the Christ, Hope of the World Church, at Kaisermühlen, near to the United Nations Building.

Along with the regular religious services the English speaking Catholic community has a choir, runs religious education courses, is involved with many charity projects and regularly arranges social events to welcome new members and maintain its strong sense of kinship.

The next function will be a "Thanksgiving Luncheon". The American tradition is fast approaching and the Americans in VESCC are planning a Thanksgiving feast for the community after mass on Sunday, November 28.

Collections and charitable donations made via the VESCC are divided between Catholic charities Missio, Caritas and Mothers in Need, or go to one of five community charities, including the community’s own fund, named after the founder, Father Ungar. The fund provides support to people such as refugees and asylum seekers arriving in Austria, helping them with food, medicine, transport and providing German courses for beginners.
