Newborn antelope steps into the limelight

A newborn antelope has been named Rasco, managers of Vienna’s Schönbrunn Zoo announced today (Weds).

Director Dagmar Schratter said he hoped the male Roan Antelope, who was born on 8 October, would become the zoo’s new top attraction.

"He instinctively hid behind a tree trunk for some days, but now he’s running and jumping through his enclosure the whole day," she said.

Schratter explained that the natural habitat of Roan Antelopes was Africa, adding that they were not yet an endangered species.

The zoo chief explained Rasco’s mother Emi was born at Schönbrunn Zoo in 2000, while his dad Ken was transferred from a zoo in Dortmund, Germany, to Vienna only last year.

Some 2,180,000 people visited the zoo – located near Schönbrunn Palace – last year, down by 400,000 compared to 2008.
