Elderly Austrians cycle the most, research shows

Pensioners are Austria’s keenest cyclists, research has shown.

Traffic Club Austria (VCÖ) found that 30 per cent of people aged between 60 and 69 cycled several times a week, with Austrians aged between 15 and 19 being the second most enthusiastic (27 per cent).

Only 18 per cent of people aged between 20 and 29 said they would cycle several times a week, the organisation reported today (Mon).

VCÖ announced plans for new health and traffic pollution awareness campaigns to raise the number of regular cyclists.

Around half a million bikes were sold across Austria last year, and experts have said the introduction of electric bicycles could lead to even higher sales figures over the next few years.
