Vienna officials have given the green light for swimming in the Danube’s Neue Donau stream as temperatures are expected to reach a whopping 37 degrees centigrade today (Fri).
City authorities announced this morning that the area was open for swimmers as of now after it was closed during a week of floods.
Officials decided to lift the ban after workers removed up to half a metre of accrued mud.
The Neue Donau flows by the Donauinsel (Danube Island), Vienna’s anti-flooding protection dam. The recreation area, which can be accessed free of charge, is a Mecca for sports enthusiasts since it offers excellent opportunities to swim, cycle and rollerblade.
Experts at The Federal Centre for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) meanwhile said the "African heat wave" which has Austria in its grip at the moment will continue until Tuesday. ZAMG meteorologists expect temperatures to remain tropical before dropping sharply next Wednesday.

This extraordinarily stifling period followed an unusually cold May dominated by strong rainfalls. Overflowing rivers kept firemen and soldiers busy at several areas across the country.
Hundreds of houses in the provinces of Styria, Lower Austria and Burgenland were left uninhabitable by floods in June 2009.
