KHM happy with visitor figures and annual ticket sales

Vienna’s Museum of Art (Kunsthistorisches Museum, KHM) bosses said yesterday (Thurs) earnings last year and visitor figures in the first two months of this year were up.

KHM official Paul Frey said he saw the institution "in the ascendant" as earnings increased by 36 per cent year on year in 2009.

Frey also announced that 513,911 people visited the museum – located in Vienna’s city centre – last year, while it had 13 per cent more visitors in the first two months of this year compared to the same time span in 2009.

He said 2009 visitor figures reached 1.14 millions considering the museum’s six sister institutions such as the theatre museum and Ambras Castle.

Frey said more than 22,800 annual tickets – which cost 29 Euros – were sold since they went on sale last November.

The KHM currently hosts a special exhibition on Dutch baroque artist Johannes Vermeer’s painting "The Art of Painting" and his era called "Vermeer. Die Malkunst. Spurensicherung an einem Meisterwerk" (Vermeer's painting. On the trail of a masterpiece).

The theatre museum, which is also located in Vienna’s city centre, meanwhile currently focuses on composer Gustav Mahler who was born 150 years ago.
