Vernal equinox on Saturday
The vernal equinox - the day on which the sun crosses the equator and is as long as the night - will take place this Saturday, 20 March, says Vienna’s Central Agency for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG).
Days will become progressively longer until the summer solstice on 21 June, when there will be 16 hours and five minutes of sun in the Vienna area.
Days will then grow progressively shorter until the winter solstice on 22 December, when there will be eight hours and 20 minutes of sun.
The vernal equinox this year coincides with the beginning of spring, at least as far as temperatures are concerned.
ZAMG said Saturday would highs of 19 degrees Celsius, with the highest readings in southeastern Austria, accompanied by bright sunshine and an almost cloudless sky.
The weather will be good in the run-up to Saturday, with highs today ranging from 12 to 17 degrees and as high as 19 on Friday.
ZAMG warned, however, that another front would cross Austria on Monday, producing some rain and highs of only 10 degrees.
