Prepare for allergies, says pollen warning service

The approach of spring poses the threat of a significant rise in pollution and allergies, the pollen warning service said yesterday (Mon).

Pollen from alder and hazel vegetation would produce the first pollen in low-lying areas in southern and eastern Austria but the service noted that the level of such pollen there would be relatively low.

But pollen from birch trees would be higher than normal in southern and eastern Austria but lower than normal in western and northern Austria.

Grass pollen would depend a lot on the weather but normally did not vary much from year to year, the service added.

Pollen still seems like a dream though given the weather, with as much as 30 centimetres of snow expected on the north side of the Alps from Vorarlberg to the Schneeberg near Vienna, the Central Agency for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) said yesterday.

Agency meteorologist Claudia Riedl in Salzburg said 30 centimetres of new snow was likely at 1,500 metres and 50 centimetres possible at heights above 1,500 metres. She added the snow line would rise from east to west in Austria.

After that, though, the weather will begin to warm up, with highs of 10 tomorrow and 14 on Thursday predicted.

New snow will also raise the danger of avalanches in Lower Austria, where the danger level is expected to be four today in the western part of the province. It was at level three in many areas yesterday.
