Waltz 'shocked' about Oscar triumph

Austrian actor Christoph Waltz claimed he was "totally surprised" about being awarded an Oscar for his role in "Inglorious Basterds" last night (Sun).

The 53-year-old said he was "shocked" when Penelope Cruz spoke out his name for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor at the 82nd Academy Awards – despite the fact bookmakers regarded him as clear favourite to snatch the prize.

It was the 18th award for the Vienna-born actor’s performance as fictional SS colonel Hans Landa in the World War II satire.

Waltz especially thanked Quentin Tarantino, stressing he would need "a week" to mention everyone involved in the project.

The Oscar for Waltz was the only award for the hit movie which also stars Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger and Daniel Brühl.

Asked after the award show what Waltz was up to now, he said he planned to "get carried from one party to the next".

Social Democratic (SPÖ) Chancellor Werner Faymann said the award was "well deserved", while People’s Party (ÖVP) Vice Chancellor Josef Pröll said Waltz’ delivered a "great performance" in the movie.

The role of Hans Landa was the international breakthrough for Waltz who has starred in dozens of European TV and cinema productions.

Two more Austrians were nominated at this year’s Academy Awards.

Michael Haneke’s black and white drama "Das weiße Band" (The White Ribbon) – a German-Austrian-French co-production – lost out getting Best Foreign Language Film, as did the movie’s cameraman Christian Berger, nominated for Best Camera.

National broadcaster ORF today said up to 110,000 people tuned in for its live coverage of last night’s award show.

Private channel ATV meanwhile announced it sealed the Austrian free TV screening rights for war thriller "The Hurt Locker" which won six Oscars last night. The station however did not reveal when the movie directed by Kathryn Bigelow would be broadcast.
