Westwood named Traditional Costumes Ambassador

British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood is to be awarded the title of Ambassador of Traditional Austrian Customs, it has emerged.

Fashion show organisers Gexi and Anna Tostmann said today (Mon) the 68-year-old will be awarded at a gala at Vienna’s Palais Niederösterreich on 24 March.

They said the decision had come because Westwood had often supported the wearing of traditional costumes.

"There would be no ugliness in the world if all woman wore dirndls," Westwood said during a visit to Austria in 2001.

The fashion industry icon is married to Tyrolean Andreas Kronthaler.

"We expect both of them to attend the gala," the event organisers, which was first held in 2006, said.
