'Hidden treasures' on show at the Leopold Museum

"Hidden treasures" of Austrian watercolour art are on display at Vienna’s Leopold Museum from today (Fri).

The exhibition "Verborgene Schätze der österreichischen Aquarellmalerei", which will run until 24 May, features 200 precious watercolours by artists like Egon Schiele, Rudolf von Alt and Gustav Klimt which were only rarely shown in public before. Works by 54 artists are featured in the exhibition, curators have said.

Elisabeth Leopold said the exhibit would focus on her husband’s favourite artists. Rudolf Leopold, owner and manager of the museum, collected more than 5,000 pieces of art in his life. He turned 85 earlier this week.

Tens of thousands of people visit the museum, located in Vienna-Neubau, every year to see its permanent Klimt and Schiele exhibit. It recently hosted an acclaimed exhibition on Norwegian artist Edvard Munch and contemporaries.

The Leopold Museum is open daily expect Tuesdays between 10am and 6pm and until 9pm on Thursdays. Go to www.leopoldmuseum.org for more information.
