Vienna's Naschmarkt to be car-free by 2015

Vienna’s most popular market, the Naschmarkt, will be car-free by 2015, it emerged today (Tues).

Renovation of the market, one of the city’s biggest tourist attractions, will include closure of the Schleifmühl bridge that will make it possible to unite the market’s present two sections into one without cross traffic or any other barriers.

Social Democratic official Renate Kaufmann from the city's Mariahilf district, said she wanted a 650 square metre area of the market to be available for parties and cooking shows.

City officials have said market renovation will cost 15 million Euros and be finished in 2015.

They had said last December that the Naschmarkt’s water and power supply lines would be renovated in summer 2010 and several other measures would be taken "to improve the market’s ecology".

The Naschmarkt – located in Vienna-Wieden – is a favourite with residents as well as tourists for its diversity.

The market was established between 1910 and 1916 and has around 120 stalls including fruit and vegetable traders as well as spice dealers and cheese experts, as well as bars and restaurants.

The market, the city’s second largest after the Brunnenmarkt, has a daily average of 58,000 visitors.
