Belvedere to host Hrdlicka exhibit

Vienna’s Belvedere gallery is to stage a major exhibition on late Austrian sculptor Alfred Hrdlicka.

Museum officials said 15 works by Hrdlicka, who passed away aged 81 in December, will be on display at its Unteres Belvedere and Orangerie palaces between 23 June and 19 September 2010.

Hrdlicka is considered as one of Austria’s most important artists of the 20th century. His work often caused heated public debate since it mostly dealt with topics like war, fascism and the Bible.

The Belvedere, located in Vienna-Landstraße, is currently venue of an exhibit on Prince of Savoy-Carignan Francois-Eugène as a statesman and an art patron.

Prinz Eugen, as he is known in Austria, was a renowned lover and collector of art. The military commander left a vast collection of paintings, copper engravings, hand writings and books. The Belvedere was his summer residence.

The Belvedere is one of Vienna’s most popular museums. Its permanent collection, located at the Oberes Belvedere palace, features works by Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele.
