Vienna’s Schönbrunn Zoo announced today (Weds) its newest addition was a baby ring-tailed lemur.
Zoo Director Dagmar Schratter said the new arrival would be cared for not only by mother Mira but by other female lemurs.
She said: "When the little ball of fur gets bigger, it will ride not only on its mother’s back but also on the backs of other female lemurs. Lemurs are jointly raised by all females in a colony."
The ring-tailed lemur, distinctive for the black and white rings on its long tail, is native to the island of Madagascar off the eastern coast of Africa.
It is a highly social animal that lives in colonies of up to 30 individuals dominated by females. It is omnivorous and diurnal, active exclusively during the day.
Although considered to be under threat because of the destruction of their environment, lemurs breed readily in captivity, in which they have an average life span of 27 years.
The Zoo, the oldest in the world, is one of Vienna’s biggest tourist attractions.
