Austrian physicist creates basis for functional artificial muscles

An Austrian physicist has used historical inspiration to create the basis for functional artificial muscles, it was reported today (Mon).

Siegfried Bauer of Linz University used modern equipment to perform an experiment first carried out by the inventor of X-rays, German physicist Wilhelm Röntgen (1845-1923), according to scientific journal PNAS.

Bauer, who specialises in the physics of soft materials, used an elastic band secured at both ends and made tense by attached weights that he manipulated to create different degrees of tension, causing the band to expand and contract.

What Röntgen called "a fun experiment" has become for Bauer the basis for artificial muscles.
