Baby Dalmatian pelican new Sch�nbrunn Zoo attraction

A baby Dalmatian pelican has become Sch�nbrunn Zoo�s latest attraction.

The Vienna zoo�s director Dagmar Schratter said today (Fri): "The hatching rate is low at this time of year since the parents must constantly keep the eggs warm."

She noted, however, that the parents had some experience since they had produced offspring at the same time last year.

Dalmatian pelicans share in the work of keeping eggs warm and raising their young, giving them pre-digested food, she added.

Schratter also said the zoo was expecting a baby cormorant to hatch in the near future.

Dalmatian pelicans, the largest in the pelican family, have a habitat from Eastern Europe to China and listed as an endangered species.

Sch�nbrunn Zoo began breeding Dalmatian pelicans in the 1990s and has 21 such birds at present, one of the largest Dalmatian pelican colonies in captivity in the world.
