Three Austrians nominated for Oscars

The chances of more Austrian movie glory have grown after three Austrian artists were nominated for Academy Awards.

Austrian director Michael Haneke�s black and white drama "Das wei�e Band" (The White Ribbon) � a German-Austrian-French co-production � is in the running for Best Foreign Language Film.

Vienna-born Christoph Waltz, who lives in Berlin and London, was yesterday (Tues) nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role of fictional SS colonel Hans Landa in the World War II satire "Inglorious Basterds".

Both artists won awards at the Cannes International Film Festival last year and at this year�s Golden Globes.

As well as Haneke and Waltz � both seen as favourites for Oscar honours at the ceremony set to take place at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles on 7 March � "Das wei�e Band" cameraman Christian Berger has been nominated for an Academy Award.

Social Democratic (SP�) Culture Minister Claudia Schmied said: "The successes of Austrian filmmakers are outstanding."

The Alliance for the Future of Austria (BZ�) Culture Issues spokesman Stefan Petzner praised the nomination news as a "milestone".
