Schönbrunn Zoo to renovate simian house

Vienna’s Schönbrunn Zoo is to start a 2.6-million-Euro renovation of its simian house this summer, zoo officials said today (Weds).

Zoo officials said today (Weds) renovation would restore the house, which is home to five species of simians at present, and prepare it as the living quarters for four species of small simians.

They added that the transfer of the zoo’s orang-utans to new quarters in the ORANG.erie last May had provided space to make the house larger, more attractive and more animal-friendly.

Visitors to the zoo can help support the project by buying a "support stone" for 160 Euros which will have buyers’ names, the date they bought it and other personal information engraved and then mounted at the zoo’s bird fountain square.

Revenue from the sale of 1,200 stones will be used to pay for the renovation.

Meanwhile, the zoo’s latest attraction is a newborn squirrel monkey native to Central and South America.

The baby will cling to its mother’s back for a month until it is big enough to venture out on its own, according to zoologist Harald Schwammer.

The mother arrived at the zoo in summer 2008.

The zoo, the oldest in the world, is one of the capital’s major tourist attractions.
