British historian to present new book in Vienna

Giles MacDonogh will present his new book in Vienna this week, it has been announced.

The historian � author of several books on German history � will be at the British Bookshop at Weihburggasse 24 this Thursday (21 January) between 7pm and 9pm to speak about "1938: Hitler's Gamble".

I didnÂ�t read the book yet, but I hope that the author had not forgotten all the efforts of Austrian patriots to avoid the Anschluss to HitlerÂ�s Germany. From Dollfuss murdered by the Nazis in 1934 to Kurt von Schuschnigg who tried to avoid the invasion and called a plebiscite so the Austrians could remain being Austrians and not Germans, and less under the Nazi tyranny. But in my opinion we must remember that the whole operation was called Â�OttoÂ�, by a very simple reason, Otto von Habsburg Lothringen was the real enemy of Hitler and the Nazis, a good reason to sentence to death the whole Imperial and Royal Family, and even the Hohenberg brothers ended in a concentration camp for 7 years. Franz Werfel the great historian and author of Jewish ancestry, as secretary to the Heir of the Throne during his exile in the USA and Canada, said Archduke Otto was the main target for the Nazis, his Austrian patriotism, his devotion for the unity of the country, and his rejection to any concession to HitlerÂ�s demands, make him the worst enemy of Hitler. Even Eduard Benes, hated so much the Habsburg, that he said few days before the annexation of Czechoslovakia, better Hitler than the Habsburgs. His hate towards the dynasty that ruled almost 7 centuries was so deep that he even negotiated with the devil, instead of supporting OttoÂ�s efforts to stop Hitler during his trip to London and Paris.
