Controversial nude art linked to naked celebrities by many has been put on display by a Viennese gallery.
"Hollywood", the latest collection by Mel Ramos – pioneer of the so-called "West Coast Pop Art" circle – now on at Galerie Hilger located in Vienna-Innere Stadt is set to stir up a scandal as the American artist’s nude portraits have striking resemblances to Hollywood stars.
The "Hollywood" canvases show women who can be identified as actresses Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Aniston and Penelope Cruz leaning naked on huge letters spelling the word "Hollywood".
German model Claudia Schiffer reportedly once ensured one painting would be never shown in public ever again after recognising herself in it.
"Hollywood" will be on at the Galerie Hilger until 23 February, while the Albertina – one of Austria’s most popular museums normally focusing on greats like Claude Monet or Vincent van Gogh – is planning a Mel Ramos retrospective next year.
